  Day 3 – Bordeaux

September 21st, 2002

“deux grands café crème”

View of Bordeaux from La Flèche St-MichelAfter a whopping 18-hour sleep, we woke up refreshed and eager to see the sites.  We selected the perfect little salon du thé and ordered 2 grands café crème and breakfast. There is something so wonderful about traveling in France. I am not sure if it was the excitement of being in France, the anticipation of the wonderful days to come or maybe just the flakiness of the pain au chocolat I just had, but I had a tear in my eye. Spiros spent most of the conversation looking over my shoulder at the Carte D’Or poster, selecting his next ice cream treat. Mmmmm...ice cream.

We started the sightseeing by going to the flea market by Basillque St. Michel in the Portuguese-North African quarter. It was crowded, noisy, colorful and bustling with excitement. It was fantastic!  We would also recommend climbing the Flèche St-Michel, the tallest tower in the region. At 114 m high, it has some great views of the city. We also visited impressive Cathédrale St-André and Basilique St-Seurin. The rest of day was spent meandering around the streets of Bordeaux. Bordeaux is an ethnically diverse city with great food, colorful markets, interesting 18th century architecture and some great museums. It was very much worth the time we spent there.
